MND Scotland

A shared commitment to supporting people with MND in Scotland

The Alan Davidson Foundation is a longstanding supporter of MND Scotland, a national charity dedicated to supporting everyone in Scotland affected by Motor Neurone Disease (MND). United by a shared mission to improve quality of life and accelerate progress toward a cure, the Foundation has provided vital funding across MND Scotland’s core areas of work: care, research, and advocacy.

This partnership reflects the Foundation’s deep Scottish roots—Alan Davidson was born in Aberdeen and studied at the University of Edinburgh—and honours Alan’s lived experience of MND by ensuring others facing the disease receive the support they need, both today and in the future.

Backing life-changing support services

MND Scotland delivers a comprehensive range of services to support people living with MND and their families across the country. These include:

  • Specialist equipment loans
  • Welfare and support grants
  • Counselling and emotional support
  • Advocacy and campaigning
  • Respite care and accessible holidays

The Alan Davidson Foundation has contributed to the direct delivery of these services, ensuring that people with MND in Scotland—particularly in rural and remote communities—have equal access to the help and resources they need. This work aligns closely with the Foundation’s commitment to equity of access, practical impact, and compassionate care.

Accelerating research for a cure

MND Scotland is also a leading funder of MND research in Scotland and the UK, supporting both early-career scientists and major collaborative studies. The Alan Davidson Foundation has provided targeted funding to help:

  • Advance new and emerging research projects
  • Support translational science aimed at developing treatments
  • Enable clinical trial participation through initiatives such as MND-SMART, which the Foundation also supports

These efforts represent a shared belief that world-class research must be backed by long-term, stable funding—and that people with MND deserve more than hope; they deserve progress.

Collaboration on national initiatives

The Alan Davidson Foundation and MND Scotland have also worked together as key partners in national campaigns and projects, including:

  • MND-SMART, a ground-breaking UK-wide clinical trial led from Scotland, which the Foundation supports through its Davidson Nurses Programme
  • Policy advocacy calling for faster access to benefits, better care coordination, and investment in MND research
  • Raising public awareness about the realities of MND and the urgent need for change

By working collaboratively, both organisations have helped build momentum for systemic improvement across Scotland’s MND landscape.

Looking ahead

As MND Scotland continues to deliver hope, care, and scientific leadership, the Alan Davidson Foundation remains a committed partner. This enduring relationship honours Alan Davidson’s life and legacy by helping ensure that every person with MND in Scotland receives the care, dignity, and opportunity they deserve.

Together, we’re not only supporting those living with MND today—we’re investing in a future without it.
