The Davidson PlayGC Bursary

Championing new voices in theatre
In 2024, the Alan Davidson Foundation, in collaboration with PlayGC Theatre Company, launched the Davidson PlayGC Bursary—a £60,000 initiative designed to support emerging playwrights and theatres in producing innovative new works. This bursary reflects the Foundation’s dedication to fostering creativity and providing opportunities for fresh voices in the theatrical landscape.
Inaugural award and impact
The first £20,000 bursary was awarded to London’s renowned Royal Court Theatre, known for its commitment to new writing. Under the leadership of Artistic Director David Byrne, the bursary supported playwright Oli Forsyth in developing his play BRACE BRACE. The production premiered in October 2024 at the Royal Court’s Jerwood Theatre Upstairs, receiving critical acclaim and playing to sold-out audiences. Directed by Daniel Raggett, the play featured performances by Anjana Vasan, Craig Els, and Phil Dunster.
The success of BRACE BRACE underscores the bursary’s role in enabling playwrights to focus on their craft without financial constraints, providing them with the resources and support necessary to bring compelling stories to the stage.
David Byrne, Artistic Director of the Royal Court said:
“This brilliant new bursary from the Alan Davidson Foundation and PlayGC has made it possible to present Oli Forsyth’s thrilling BRACE BRACE as part of my first season as Artistic Director here at the Royal Court. Directed by Daniel Raggett, the play promises to be a thrilling theatrical experience, and with Oli Forsyth being named as our Jerwood New Playwright 2024, this bursary is already making a huge impact on the career and work of some the UK’s most promising new writers.”
Continued commitment
Building on the success of its inaugural year, the Davidson PlayGC Bursary has committed to supporting the Royal Court Theatre for an additional two years. This ongoing partnership ensures that more emerging playwrights will have the opportunity to develop and present their work, contributing to the vibrancy and diversity of contemporary theatre.
Alan Davidson Foundation’s role
The Alan Davidson Foundation’s support of the Davidson PlayGC Bursary aligns with its broader mission to back initiatives that promote innovation and inclusivity in the arts. By investing in programs that nurture new talent, the Foundation continues to honor Alan Davidson’s legacy of championing creative expression, his love of theatre and his wishes to support the arts community.
