The Davidson Prize announces their 2024 brief: “Rethinking Home – Adapt and Reuse”

Teams will be asked to choose any existing non-residential structure, from a disused farm building to an office block or an oil rig, to explore how it could be retrofitted or mined to provide at least five sustainable homes.

The fourth annual award will demand an “ambitious rethink” of current assumptions around housing and will need to inspire renters and buyers by showcasing how an ideal home can emerge from the realms of upcycling, recycling, mining, and creative reuse. This approach aims to reimagine traditional notions of home and lifestyles, offering fresh perspectives on dwelling spaces.

“This year’s brief presents an exciting opportunity for teams to think outside of the box within existing structures and create a proposal that has the potential to influence the future home in a building already present.” – Amandeep Singh Kalra, Associate Director at Be First (Chair of 2024 Jury)

Submissions, which must be from multi-disciplinary teams with at least one registered architect, will need to demonstrate key organisational, structural, and environmental principles while focusing on how typical homes are experienced by the people who live in them. The 2024 Davidson Prize winner will be announced in June 2024.
